Loud, dirty, gray. The increasing volume of traffic on Swiss and Liechtenstein roads shapes the everyday lives of children and young people. Noise and exhaust gases are detrimental to health. In addition, unwelcoming environments and safety risks mean that children and young people are spending an increasingly small proportion of their free time in public spaces. Designing public spaces to be child-friendly can promote the health and wellbeing of children and young people and significantly influence their development. Together with the participants, we want to address the question of how the rights to safety, health, leisure and participation enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child can also be implemented in public spaces.

How can we make public spaces more welcoming? What impact does traffic have on the mental and physical health of children and young people? How can children’s rights to leisure and participation be implemented in public spaces? And what solutions exist in connection with these questions?

At the networking event, we will explore these and other questions in depth together with representatives from Child-Friendly Cities, spatial and traffic planners, organizations dedicated to children’s rights, and relevant professional associations and universities. An interactive marketplace will also provide an opportunity for participants to get to know each other and exchange ideas.
